Coyote Canyon Mammoth Site Tours
Coyote Canyon Mammoth Site Tours are an excellent way to experience the majesty and unbounded excitement of a real life mammoth bone dig in the side of a sand cliff in the desert.
Civic groups, clubs, etc., the general public, and school groups may visit the site on a scheduled tour.
The MCBONES Research Center (also known as the Dig House) at the site has limited classroom/meeting space that can accommodate only up to 30 people per tour.
Tours generally last 1.5 hours. About half of the time is spent in the Dig House for a presentation going over the discovery, history, and findings of the site, along with guided tours of laboratory activities and displays of key specimens and interpretive panels. The remaining time of the tour is spent outside at the actual dig site, with guided tours of the active excavation and wet screening operations.
Site Conditions
We thank you for your interest in touring the Coyote Canyon Mammoth Site (a private research and education site).
NOTE: The Coyote Canyon Mammoth Site is NOT ADA compliant.
The site is primitive, with unimproved gravel roads and parking areas.
Our Dig House has no heating or air conditioning and limited potable water and restroom facilities. A portable toilet is available near the dig site.
The actual dig site is accessed via a 300 meter (328 yards) unimproved trail or a gravel road.
The site was once an industrial area, so glass, sharp metal objects, and other anthropogenic hazards are present. Additionally, there are a number of other natural hazards – uneven terrain, black widow spiders, snakes, scorpions, extreme temperatures, and sun exposure.
Site Safety and Comfort
Those on a tour must wear appropriate footwear (no sandals or open toe shoes) and outerwear (hat, etc.) appropriate for the expected weather conditions.
Participants should bring all items needed for an extended outdoor experience, including but not limited to sunscreen, snacks, drinking water, etc.
Oh, and remember to bring your camera!
Three types of tours of the Coyote Canyon Mammoth Site are available:
1) Civic Groups/Clubs/Other Community Organizations - minimum 10, maximum 30 individuals.
2) General Public
3) School Groups - maximum of 30 individuals.
Civic groups, clubs, and other community organizations, the general public, and school classes/groups are encouraged to see excavated specimens in the on-site MCBONES Research Center, as well as the ongoing excavations at the dig site.
All tour participants must sign a Liability Waiver Form.
(parent or guardian must sign for those under 18 years old).
The Liability Waiver Form will be sent with the confirmation of a tour or be signed upon arrival at the dig site.
