Volunteers Needed At Coyote Canyon Mammoth Dig Site
The Coyote Canyon Mammoth research dig site contains the remains of a Columbian mammoth likely
killed in an Ice Age flood 17,000 years ago. We are learning the context, in which our mammoth lived,
through paleontology, geology, biology, botany, and other natural sciences, as well as Eastern
Washington’s Ice Age history. Under the MCBONES Research Center Foundation, we share findings
and analysis with the public. If you are intrigued and interested in learning more, then this may be the
volunteer experience you are looking for. Volunteer opportunities are open to adults and high school
youths (if accompanied by an adult). All volunteers are trained on the job when necessary. Preexisting
skills and talents are desirable, but not required.
If you are interested in any of the following volunteer
jobs, contact Gary Kleinknecht at [email protected] to get signed up.
Wet screen operation - washing sediment from the excavation over fine-mesh screens to expose bones
of small animals, remains of insects and plants.
Unit excavation - carefully and meticulously removing sediment that has buried the mammoth bones.
This is one of the most technical tasks and involves documentation.
Picking - sorting through dried sediments provided by the wet screen operation. This involves selecting
tiny organics (formerly living items) from the sediments (mostly sand) under magnifying lamps
.
Gift shop operation - selling and maintaining records of inventory of items in our small store.
Micro photography - photographing organics provided by the picking operation under a microscope.
Patience and a steady hand are recommended.
3D printing and bone replication - work with our technology manager to use 3D printing device to
create replicas of mammoth bones.
Curate bones - work with our bone curator to clean, restore and preserve mammoth bones.
Public education - work with our tour guides to host on-site tours for schools and/or the public, and to
attend public events to represent the mammoth project.
Board member - monitor and promote the operations at Coyote Canyon Mammoth Site. Must attend
monthly meetings to set policy for the project. Connections with community leaders is desirable.
Internet marketing and promotion - work with our marketing manager to inform the public of our
project.
Volunteer coordinator - welcome new volunteers and see that they are properly trained and are getting
their questions answered.
